"In 2007 he became one of the first high-profile sports professionals to come out as gay - a courageous move in a sport which often defines the word macho. He has spoken about this decision as being the biggest challenge he has ever faced - even more so than officiating an international match under intense scrutiny in front of 95,000 spectators and a global TV audience. The severe depression he experienced coming to terms with his sexuality culminated in an attempt to take his own life in his twenties."

Nigel Owens, of course - if you haven't listened to his extremely moving contribution to Desert Island Discs, do try to. Acknowledging the truth really did help to set him free.

And a prayer, from last year's UK Meet's act of reflection.

Living God,
Creator and Lover of the world, we offer our lives to you this day,
all our words and deeds, our hopes and fears, and our friendship
Accept us as we are, with all our stumbling and with all our courage.
Guide us into what you have us to be.
And in the power of your Spirit enable us to be a sign of your presence in the world,
after the pattern and in the name of Jesus your true and well Beloved.

Yesterday, when [livejournal.com profile] nodbear and I were doing a last minute plan for this Lent, I thought of the verse "Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest." I don't know about you but I feel laden with a media diet of sad news, bad news, fake news, anger and hatred. So we're concentrating on the positive this year, even though some of those positives may have a darker and adder angle within them. As is the case in this first story, about Keegan Hirst and the pain of coming out after living life in denial. I've read so many similar stories of deep despair turning to some sort of light when the truth is allowed to emerge.

This year [livejournal.com profile] nodbear and I will be doing our usual lent posts, but with a difference. We're going to try to share positive news stories all the way through, with some reflections related to them, particularly on Fridays. Monday, Wednesday and Friday posts will be here, with Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays at [livejournal.com profile] nodbear's.

And for those of you who are observing Shrove Tuesday in the traditional way, enjoy your pancakes!

Was thinking - in a serious context - earlier about the widow's mite. Made me think of this old joke, that was told to me by a lay reader:

Churchwarden to new curate: What text are you preaching on, Sunday?
Curate: I thought I'd do the story of the window's mite.
Churchwarden: Ooh, I wouldn't.
Curate: Why?
Churchwarden: There are only two widows in this parish and both of them 'do'.

I've had an account at Dreamwidth for [livejournal.com profile] charliecochrane since the last LJ hoo-hah. I'm still mirroring it on LJ and Wordpress. [livejournal.com profile] mylodon will be staying here for the foreseeable future as that, at present, is where all my fandom lives.

[livejournal.com profile] nodbear and I will be posting throughout Advent again this year. Because we're starting later than normal (Advent Sunday having been last weekend) we're doing a sort of Advent calendar theme, with a surprise person or picture behind each door. Starts here tomorrow.

Twelvetrees, Trayfoot, Wigglesworth, Faloon, etc; they could all come straight out of Tolkein. This name may top the lot. Saw him and thought of you, [livejournal.com profile] semyaza.
