Lent: Charity begins at home 1

I've heard people use this expression to justify tthings like not donating to charities, especially when the recipients live abroad. For a start they're misunderstanding the use of 'charity' - means lovingkindness in this context.

Interestingly, home is often the place where lovingkindness breaks down, even (especially?) in the families of people who spend a lot of time demonstrating the same quality to those in need outside.
