On my doorstep and I didn't realise

I didn't realise there was a WWI memorial just minutes' drive from where I've lived the last 20 odd years, until [livejournal.com profile] stevie_carroll gave me a war graves brochure. Not an isignificant one, either, given that it's Kitchener's official war memorial. Have sahred some pics over at [livejournal.com profile] charliecochrane and am sharing more here.

Tremendous place of calm, given that there's a busy road no more than fifty yards away.

What really struck me were the names - soldiers and sailors from all over what was then the Empire. Native South Africans, Indians, Anzacs, Canadians.

This was a world war.
