Lent thoughts 13

Carrying on with the flaw in the argument about "If God hadn't wanted us to x he wouldn't have made it so nice."

Clearly there are things which feel good which aren't. Sometimes it's a matter of moderation vs excess. A glass or two of wine is nice, but drinking to excess so that you don't know what you're doing/become violent/pee up the hotel steps/rot your liver/whatever, is not. Same with gambling - a yearly flutter on the Grand National is a hoot, but spending money you don't have in the hope of the great saving win is a nightmare. Plenty of examples of the same.

Similarly, if what's pleasurable for us is painful for other people (I don't need to give a string of examples, but child abuse springs to mind) then it can't be right, either.

So, if there's a moral to this (LOL), it's don't use arguments which can be turned on their heads.
