Lent thoughts 19
Mar. 6th, 2013 09:08 amNice to see a sensible statement from a church leader concerning the Cardinal O'Brien case, one that recongnises that the issue goes beyond one man's indiscretions. The most stinging charge which has been levelled against us in this matter is hypocrisy - and for obvious reasons. Couldn't have put it better myself, so won't.
The post-mass soundbites (see Lent thoughts 17) included a lady who said she didn't believe the allegations against O'Brien (one assumes this was prior to his 'confession') and said they hadn't been "a very Catholic thing to say'. That line has had me thinking and, as usual, my thoughts have gone off on tangents.
Making false allegations (if they were false, which looks unlikely) is definitely not Catholic/not Christian/not good wherever you stand. But then my brain wandered. Some people would say that making the truth known, where it brought the church or its leaders into disrepute, wouldn't be 'a very Catholic thing'. Too many organisations have gone wrong over the years by valuing preservation of image over serving justice for the innocent. So long as the outside world thinks our church/my family/our business/this school is full of sweetness and light then everything will be alright. Won't it...?
