Lent thoughts 27

More of your man Francis of Assisi, or at least a reflection on the prayer attributed to him which I quoted last time. I love the line towards the bottom of the page linked to here.

"Sometimes Christians are called to turn the world upside down. To bring the exact opposite of what we find in our world."

I know I'm not the only one ([livejournal.com profile] alex_beecroft springs to mind) who find the sheer topsy-turveyness of Jesus' message (what, if people are mean to us we're not to retaliate and we're to wish them well?) an indication that this is God talking to us, not man. And, when Jesus talks about how the narrow path, I'm sure it's these sorts of teachings he's talking about, not a list of Old Testament laws.

I think the narrow path is certainlty related to the challenging nature of the message - which starts with some old testament - in Jesus great respect for the " two greatest commandments " but then yes conitnues into the radical and view =changing message which Jesus brings

*nods* And Jesus seems to pick out those bits of the OT which people have found uncomfortable, like wanting mercy rather than justice.

Difficult and strange, now as ever. Looks simple from the outside like pie-crust.

Brilliant analogy!

My pastry improved no end when I bought a hand held rubber-inner for the fat.
