Report part the first of the big day out

It’s always wonderful to be around people who “get it”, to whom you don’t have to explain why Vaughn Williams’ Variation on a theme of Thomas Tallis makes you cry, so meeting up with [livejournal.com profile] esteven yesterday was such a delight. Were your ears burning, because many of you got a mention, in the four plus hours of almost constant chatting (interrupted only by important things like consuming soup). Victory sail wasn't on display (chiz!) but we blagged our way into a roped off area and got to see some of the Geoff Hunt Aubrey cover originals which weren't on display.

We spent a fair amount of time looking at Dock 9 and discussing the filming of Les Mis there. And trying to get at least a few pictures that didn't include the WWI boat.

Victory looks sad without her masts (I could hardly bear to look at the old girl).

But there was one huge surprise. (No, not Surprise.) Keeping that for next time.
beckyblack: I cannot go to bed. There is Epic Shit happening on the Internet (epic shit)

Does the surprise involve the Mary Rose?

Aw, poor Victory. But still fun to visit, I'll bet.

No, not Mary Rose (alas!) Something else very close to my heart but not nautical.

I find it very hard to believe that you two didn't misbehave just a little bit! I just knew you'd both have a whale of a time :)

[identity profile] mylodon.livejournal.com 2013-05-31 07:14 am (UTC)(link)
We were exemplary. No sailors molested, no tourists pushed overboard, nuffink. But a whale of time we certainly had!

Ooo, looking forward to the surprise!

Are Victory's masts being repaired?

No bollard leaping?

[identity profile] charliecochrane.livejournal.com 2013-05-31 03:14 pm (UTC)(link)
I rarely bollard leap know. Tends to agitate my hips.

Yes, I think her masts are being repaired or refurbished or summat.

her masts are being redone - but they have been down since at least July last year as [livejournal.com profile] amaraalAnd I were there then
imagine Nelson - or Cuddy - or Ned being told their ship would need 12 months in dock to change her masts - they would be howling either with rage or laughter or both

glad you two are hvaing fun - looking forward to Esteven landing up here next weekk!

She's a grand lass, our Esteven.

And yes, Ned would be fuming at the time taken on those masts. I kept thinking of Fighting Temeraire and wanting to sob.

It is so sad to see her without masts... Like a bird without wings... *sniffles*

So - did I got it right - he masts are now repaired? Awwww... dear [livejournal.com profile] nodbear - we have to visit her again :)

Thanks for this post. Greetings to [livejournal.com profile] esteven! Have fun!!!

They're being repaired - no idea when they come back. :(

And yes, like a bird without wings. Well put.

Like a fish without fins,
Like a bird without wings,
Like a dog without a tail -
Poor Victory - without a sail... :(

I would soooo like to see her in all her glory again...

The homepage still shows the putting down of the masts. I hope they post the erection too :)

Yes, indeed. *sobs*
