varying shore II - Part I

Along with lectures, my daily consumption of your amazing writing has resumed. I have to say that I really, really enjoyed how much we are in both their heads in this episode. Both of them thinking about their feelings and what will happen and what it all means. Really adds a lot to the story. I remember hearing about writing: show, don’t tell and that’s really what this does. And the whole chapter, especially the first half was so well written (as usual I know). You must tire of the endless stream of accolades but it was so good – each word was exactly was exactly where it should be and expressed so much about their characters. It reminded me of an article I read a few years ago – the first time I really found beauty in well written prose – and I was struck by how well wrought every last bit of it was. I came away from this instalment with precisely the same feeling.

And I agonized (well as much as one can ‘agonize’ over anything in 20 minutes) over whether to post this here or where it was posted and realised that, being short on time, it wouldn’t be very nice to impose my stream of consciousness type comments on an innocent bystander without some introduction or explanation and I don’t have the time today. Sorry!

But thank you for this – so well crafted and simply a joy to read. I love lee so much and all the others too. This is terrible, Jack is rubbing off on me. *disciplines self for becoming a tart* I don’t want to be that way. I must think of archie’s example – good, loyal, strong, honest, and constant.

He was a good actor, if nothing else.
Unlike some people …

It took less then ten minutes for Adama to return, triumphantly thrusting a small silver object into Horatio’s hand and grinning smugly. “It’s called a lighter.”
Awww. I can imagine lee!jamie muddling through it all and coming up wit this.

“See? Instant fire. That good enough for you?” His father had pressed the lighter into his hand moments before he had left Galactica for the last time.
And his expressions! I love the mix of modern day parlance and the speech of the time. Adds loads to their characters

When he had hared off, weaving elegant patterns with his lithe frame among the good folk of Portsmouth, it had been to his previous lodgings; to pay the landlady - not just for the night's stay he had missed but for the fine breakfast she had provided that morning.
What a lovely image to imagine. It reminds me vaguely of something in pc when pullings was so happy and maturing watched him run off to something. Though Jamie!lee has such a lovely visage.

Adama's handsome face paled. "My father. Before I set off from Galactica in my Raptor. It was to be my good luck charm; perhaps that's why I survived when the rest didn't. I have no idea whether my old man had the same fortune as me."
Awww. Maybe this is another way they can bond  both of them having more difficult family relationships though it might make them more tempestuous at times too.

That's so true. That's why i like O'Brian because he uses so many subtle ways to tell you things. And thanks for all the compliments on the writing - and on Calavarna's behalf, too - I think this episode worked particularly well.

You can admire all the seets on the menu as long as you only order one from the waiter!

I'm sure I had that at the back of my mind. It was a nice image - i could see it so clearly.

though it might make them more tempestuous at times too.
Very perceptive, missy. That's on the horizon.

Absolutely. I find very few writers are able to capture this effectively. So well done the two of you for achieving this!

I like that. I'll use that in future. ;D

So many delectible stories to choose from, eh? I do like these two a lot (not as much as archie and horatio but lee has something about him and no, not just his gorgeous visage).

Oh yes, thank you! ANd that is a prerogative i do and will continue to exercise in my daily life. when i went for dessert with a friend about a week ago we spent aaaaaaaaaaaaages gazing at all the confections on offer ... so hard to decide ...

But deciding among the lovely guys is very hard too, though i suppose my first choice is still the kind, not as infatuated with horatio version of archie if he's still on offer though i'd rather have the archieinlovewithhoratio as a friend than the archienotaskeenonhoratio if i could only choose one i guess ...

who is at the top of your list currently? XD

Top of my list? JB2 or JW. After Saturday, depending on performance, Mr W might edge ahead...

Now I've no quarrel with JW but this wouldn't affect your writing too much would it?!! just kidding. ;P And i'll hope the JW does very well on saturday ... am looking forward to hearing your review!!!

Don't worry about stream of consciousness comments on my journal - you should see some of the things I come out with! Besides, you mentioned Jack and Archie in almost the same sentence and I'd forgive anything for that :P

both of them having more difficult family relationships though it might make them more tempestuous at times too.
This never occurred to me, but I think you're right. Their relationship was always going to be tempestuous but their mutual lack of a happy familial relationship could contribute to unseen scars surfacing. They're just a bit too similar in a way. (Good grief, I just finished school and am *still* analysing things to death...)

Awww. you're kind. I'm glad. I do try to be more organised and concise but then there's all that about the road to hell paved with good intentions ...

Besides, you mentioned Jack and Archie in almost the same sentence and I'd forgive anything for that :P
the two of them do form either ends of a continuum of loveliness, eh? I do like jack but i must admit recently, reading more of archie, i've really fallen for him again. But jack can sing ... and he does have a great smile ... *weighs* the jury's still out on that one.

They're just a bit too similar in a way. (Good grief, I just finished school and am *still* analysing things to death...)
Oh that's really interesting. I don't know much about adama - i was looking at his homesickness and separation and concern he may not get back to his own time. But i vaguely something about his not having a good relationship with his dad. I don't know what to think about aos!horatio's family - they're just not there ... his mom died when he was so young and then dad just seemed to disappear. Not necessarily a nefarious guy just absent, which perhaps made him long for family. I remember soemthing in lt h about his 'joy in knowing there was a human being who cared he was alive or dead' and so assumed he just didn't have any other family ... but maybe that does explain why he's so good with his kids (in the books) when he comes along b/c it's his way of making up for his family ... you know the guy is great fodder for a pyschological study since csf casts us into his mind so much. have to make use of it. *must think more on that* But yeah, i look forward to seeing the tempestuous-ness (yeah, that's a word ...).
